Finding a Pattern with the Progress Pattern Search Window

Note: Your Staff Manager configuration may not include this optional application. To add this application to your configuration, contact your Clinical Consultant or Client Advocate.

Whether you should assign Library Progress Patterns directly in Staff Manager depends on whether Staff Manager receives criteria-based pattern assignment information from a Registration application. If it does, you should be cautious about assigning patterns. Once a user manually assigns a Non-DRG criteria-based library pattern, Staff Manager only updates the pattern automatically if DRG criteria are received. Once a user manually assigns a DRG library pattern, Staff Manager only updates the pattern automatically if it receives updated DRG criteria.

Complete the following steps to find a pattern:

  1. From the Demand menu, select Patient Pattern Management. This opens the Patient Pattern Management page.
  2. Select the patient patterns to be displayed.
  3. Click Edit. This opens the Administer Patient Pattern window.
  4. Click the patient's Criteria link. This opens the Progress Pattern Search window.
  5. In the Find box, enter at least 3 characters of the patient's criteria or desired pattern abbreviation or description (for example, chest or 313 to find pattern DRG 313 Chest Pain). The search criteria are facility-specific and must be configured in Staff Manager. The criteria used for library pattern assignment may be a DRG code, Primary ICD code, Primary Diagnosis, or Admit Reason.
  6. Click Go.

Staff Manager searches the criteria, criteria description, pattern abbreviation and pattern description for library patterns effective as of the patient’s pattern anchor date. It returns any criteria or patterns containing the text you entered in the order in which you entered it. For example, if you enter eye disorder, the search returns all criteria and patterns with the words eye disorder in the abbreviation or description. If the patient’s current pattern criterion is DRG, Staff Manager only returns DRG patterns based on the pattern effective date and the patient’s pattern anchor date. If the patient’s current pattern criterion is not DRG-based, Staff Manager returns all criteria and associated patterns matching your Find text.

Staff Manager orders Find results by criteria as follows.

  1. Numeric order by DRG code
  2. Numeric order by ICD code
  3. Alphabetic order by Diagnosis
  4. Alphabetic order by Admit Reason.

Staff Manager displays the following information for each match:

You can sort the results by any of these columns by clicking the column heading.

If Staff Manager cannot find any matches for your entered text, the window displays the message No matches found. If a pattern has not been defined for the patient's criteria entered, the page displays the text Location in the pattern abbreviation column. In this case, you may then select the row to assign the default location-based pattern to the patient.

Updating a Patient's Criteria and Associated Library Pattern

  1. Select a criterion in the Find Results box.
  2. Click Select. Staff Manager closes the Progress Pattern Search window and updates the Administer Patient Pattern window updates the patient's information. It lists the patient's new criteria and puts an m beside the pattern column to indicate that the pattern is being updated manually.
  3. Click Save to save the change, then click Close to close the Administer Patient Pattern window and return to the Patient Pattern Management page.

Once you make a change and click Save, Staff Manager processes the change. Until the change is complete, no one can edit the patient's pattern. Staff Manager marks such patients with a green circled arrow .

The following illustration shows an example of the patient Progress Pattern Search window where a user searched for the term kidney.
